Our Workshop Faculty
Prof. Erwin LOH
President Elect, Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Medical Administrators
Professor Erwin Loh is the President Elect of the Royal Australasian College of Medical Administrators and National Director of Medical Services for Calvary Health Care. He was previously Group Chief Medical Officer at St Vincent’s Health Australia, Australia’s largest not-for-profit health provider, Chief Medical Officer at Goulburn Valley Health, a major regional health service and Chief Medical Officer of Monash Health, Victoria’s largest health network. He has qualifications in medicine, law and management. He is Professor at Monash University, where he leads the Clinical Leadership and Management Unit at the Monash Centre for Health Research and Implementation. He is Honorary Clinical Professor with the title of Professor at the Department of Medical Education, University of Melbourne. He is Honorary Professor at Macquarie University at the Centre for Health Systems and Safety Research.
He is co-editor of multiple books including “Artificial Intelligence in Medicine” and the “Textbook of Medical Administration and Leadership”. He has been an invited speaker at local and international conferences, and has published books, book chapters and journal articles on AI and health technology. He is a member of the Association of Professional Futurists, with an interest in medical futurology. He received the Distinguished Fellow Award from RACMA in 2017 for “commitment to governance, research and publication”.
Prof. Alan SANDFORD
Honorary Fellow of the Hong Kong College of Community Medicine and Past President of the Royal Australasian College of Medical Administrators
Professor Sandford is currently Director of the Regional Medical Pathway, Central Queensland and Wide Bay Hospital and Health Services & Immediate Past President and Executive Board Director with Royal Australasian College of Medical Administrators (RACMA). Also admitted as Honorary Fellow of the Hong Kong College of Community Medicine in 2023.
A Monash Graduate, he initially commenced training in Obstetrics and Gynaecology and then Emergency Medicine. Professor Sandford, a Fellow of RACMA is an experienced Specialist Medical Leader holding positions in Executive medical leadership over the past 36 years in Australia and Internationally. A longstanding priority is supporting teaching, training and supervision in an evolving medical system. He holds Honorary Professorial appointments with University of Queensland, Central Queensland University and James Cook University. Many contributions to the National health system including Membership of the Australian Medical Council - Specialist Medical Accreditation Committee (SEAC) and the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons Rural Health Equity Steering Committee.
Professor Sandford has worked and consulted in a wide variety of posts including the Middle East and across all States in Australia with a particular focus on workforce and accreditation. He is particularly delighted to be a medical lead for the newly commenced and innovative medical workforce initiative of the end-to-end Regional Medical Pathway entirely undertaken in the Wide Bay and Central Queensland regions of Australia. Professor Sandford was appointed as a Member of the Order of Australia in the Australia Day Honours in 2017 for “significant services to medical administration and health management in a number of executive roles”. Also Awarded the RACMA College Medallion in 2022, RACMA’s highest honour.
Prof. Paul LAI
Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Medical Administrators, Former Chair Professor, Department of Surgery, The Chinese University of Hong Kong
Prof. Paul Lai is an academic surgeon and specialist in general surgery from the Chinese University of Hong Kong. He is currently the Honorary Consultant in Hepato-biliary and Pancreatic Surgery at the Prince of Wales Hospital and New Territories East Cluster.
His research interests include basic and clinical sciences of surgery and surgical outcome research. He is currently the Director of the Surgical Outcomes Monitoring and Improvement Programme (SOMIP) in the Hospital Authority, Hong Kong. He has taken an active role in surgical training programmes and examinations of the College of Surgeons of Hong Kong.
Prof. Lai has received training in administrative medicine and was conferred the Fellowship of Royal Australian College of Medical Administrators in 2017, and Fellowship of the Hong Kong College of Community Medicine (Administrative Medicine) in 2018. He was appointed as the Medical Director (Quality & Safety) at the CUHK Medical Centre from 2020 to 2022.
Over the years, Prof. Lai has developed an interest in medical law and mediation. He received his Master in Medical Law (MML) in 2009 from the University of Northumbria and he is an accredited mediator in Hong Kong under the Hong Kong Mediation Accreditation Association Limited (HKMAAL).
